Project description

Koysha and Kuraz DamsLocated in northern Kenya and bordering Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda, the Omo River and Lake Turkana are key components of a larger transboundary basin. The significant developments planned for Ethiopia's Omo River are especially crucial, as this river supplies over 80% of Lake Turkana's annual freshwater influx and associated nutrients. Lake Turkana is expected to be heavily impacted by these planned developments in the Omo Basin if joint management of the shared water resources, coordination among the various sub-basin users, and, most importantly, the Kenya-Ethiopia bilateral process are not promoted.

RINA scope of supply

In the context of upstream water assessment from the Turkana Lake delta, RINA is serving as an independent consultant on behalf of lenders for the Koysha Hydropower Plant (HPP) project and is the primary dam design firm for the Kuraz Dams in Ethiopia.
