The EU has set targets for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions up to 2050, through the 2020 climate and energy package and the 2030 climate and energy framework. For the year 2030 at least 40% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions shall be reached from 1990 levels.
From the 1st of July 2015 Regulation (EU) 2015/757 on the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from maritime transport (known as EU MRV Regulation) entered into force.
MRV is a compulsory monitoring, reporting and verification system designed by the European Commission for ships greater than 5,000 GT undertaking one or more commercial voyages (cargo or passengers) into, out of or between EU ports, regardless of their flag.
For every ship, the company, defined as the shipowner or any other organisation or person, such as the manager or the bareboat charterer, which has assumed the responsibility for the operation of the ship from the shipowner, has until 2017 to prepare plans to monitor and report the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and from 2018 onwards monitor and report these emissions to be verified from 2019 onwards.
The new in-house course set byRINA Academy helps participants to obtain a solid background of the EU MRV requirements. The knowledge gained will enable them to implement corresponding measures, within the framework of European requirements and facilitate the dialogue with specialist.
