ISO 14064 Certification: GHG Inventories and Projects

How to report, reduce and offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an organization

ISO 14064ISO 14064 standards determine both the requirements of GHG inventories prepared by organizations that voluntarily quantify and report GHG emissions associated with their activities, and the requirements of GHG projects that organizations implement to effectively fight against climate change and offset their residual emissions.

With reference to the reporting of GHG inventories, organizational and reporting boundaries are determined, and the types of significant emissions and removals are identified. With reference to the implementation of GHG projects, the GHG baseline is identified, the sources/sinks/reservoirs relevant to the reference scenario are selected, and GHG reductions/removals are quantified and monitored.

All the organisations, both in the public and private sectors, can apply. The reporting of GHGs through the inventories verified by RINA and the activities of reducing emissions and/or increasing GHG removals validated and verified by RINA according to the relevant standards allow to:

continuously monitor GHG emissions associated with present or future activities;
identify possible improvement strategies, determining the most critical elements;
enhance the company's attention to environmental issues;
take advantage of a more transparent relationship with customers and, in general, all stakeholders.

Why choose RINA?

RINA is an ISO 14064-1 verification body accredited by ACCREDIA (Accreditation Certificate no. 0002VV), without geographical limitations, and can therefore provide the service for any type of organization, wherever it is located.

RINA has gained many years of experience in GHG validation and verification activities operating:

Validation and/or verification procedure

The process follows the following steps:

formulation of the offer after receipt of the information questionnaire by the customer;
document verification: strategic and risk analysis, GHG inventory/project assessment, data collection and examination of calculation methodologies;
validation/verification activities: on-site verification of data acquisition and modelling of calculations carried out with the software used for analysis;
reporting: preparation of the validation/verification report and the draft opinion;
independent technical review of the validation/verification activities carried out and finalisation of the reporting phase.

Our experts answer to the most frequently questions

No, it is necessary that a GHG project always relies on a reference GHG program, which establishes its requirements and characteristics (eg: eligibility, additionality, permanence, etc.)
Yes, a company that operates multiple sites or has multiple multi-sites and/or multi-legal entities (e.g., subsidiaries) can compile a single emission inventory, consolidating all GHG emissions information from these different locations or entities into a single report
If an organization decides to report the GHG emissions associated with one of its products / services, the study to be prepared is a carbon footprint

Regulatory focus

In the current social and environmental context increasingly affected by the effects of climate change, the reporting of GHG inventories and the implementation of GHG projects are an effective tool in the fight against global warming. In particular, the verification of GHG inventories is carried out with reference to ISO 14064-1 which determines the requirements for organizations that voluntarily quantify and report the GHG emissions associated with their activities while the initial validation and subsequent verification of GHG projects are carried out with reference to ISO 14064-2 which determines the requirements for organizations that quantify, voluntarily monitor and report through projects the reduction of emissions and/or the increase in GHG removals.
